1 Butut — Peanuts (Issued 1971-1974)

The 1 Butut was the smallest denomination of The Gambia’s decimal coinage, struck between 1971 and 1974, with one hundred bututs making up a single dalasi. It was produced in bronze, an alloy of 97% copper, 0.5% tin and 2.5% zinc, giving it the warm brown appearance of a minor-value coin. At just 1.8 grams and 17.2 millimetres in diameter, it was the lightest and smallest round coin of the series, intended for the lowest everyday transactions. It has since been withdrawn.

The obverse shows the bust of President Dawda Jawara facing left, consistent with the portrait design used throughout the coinage.

The reverse features peanuts, with the denomination placed to the right. Groundnuts were a mainstay of the Gambian economy, making the motif a fitting choice for the country’s smallest coin.
