50 Bututs — African Ox (Issued 1971)

The 50 Bututs was a circulation coin of The Gambia struck in 1971, part of the decimal series introduced when the dalasi and its subunit, the butut, replaced the earlier currency. It was produced in copper-nickel, an alloy of 75% copper and 25% nickel, giving it a bright, hard-wearing surface suited to everyday handling. At 11.31 grams and 28.5 millimetres in diameter, it was a substantial round coin and one of the larger denominations in circulation. It has since been withdrawn from use.

The obverse carries the bust of the President facing left, the standard portrait design used across this series of Gambian coinage. The portrait dominates the field and identifies the issuing authority of the newly decimalised currency.

The reverse depicts an African domestic ox, with the design dividing the denomination. The animal reflects the agricultural life of The Gambia and forms the central motif of the coin’s reverse.
