50 Dalasis Dalasi (Issued 2019-2023)
Embedded within the paper of this Central Bank of The Gambia fifty dalasis note is a windowed security thread that runs vertically through the note, shifting appearance under light and providing a primary line of defence against counterfeiting. A watermark zone is visible in the lighter area to the left of centre on the front face, where a ghost image of the numeral fifty can be discerned when the note is held to light. The note was introduced as part of The Gambia’s modern Dalasi System series, designed to incorporate contemporary security standards appropriate for a circulating currency in the 2019–2023 period. The overall paper stock carries fine intaglio printing that gives certain design elements a raised, tactile quality characteristic of professionally produced banknotes.
On the front, the dominant central image is a large, finely engraved African fish eagle rendered in deep purple and dark blue ink, depicted standing upright on a rocky surface with its wings partially raised, its head turned slightly and its talons clearly defined. To the left of the eagle, a second smaller bird of prey is shown in mid-flight, wings spread, adding dynamism to the composition. To the lower left, a Helmeted Guinea Fowl — the national bird of The Gambia — is depicted standing, rendered in the same restrained purple palette. The background of the note is composed of layered guilloché rosettes and fine geometric latticework in violet and pale lavender, providing a visually complex anti-reproduction field across the full width. In the upper left, the bold numeral “50” is printed in dark purple, and in the lower right the numeral is repeated in the same large format. The issuing authority is clearly identified in the upper centre in serif text reading “Central Bank of The Gambia,” with the promise text “Promise to pay on demand the sum of Fifty Dalasis” printed to the right in smaller lettering. Beneath this, Arabic script appears in a decorative band, providing bilingual identification of the denomination. To the right of centre, the Gambian national coat of arms is reproduced in detailed intaglio, featuring the characteristic axe and hoe on a shield, flanked by lions. The serial number A1430919 appears twice — once vertically in red on the left margin and once horizontally in black to the lower right — printed in a clear, modern typeface. Two signature lines below the central image are captioned “Governor” and “First Deputy Governor” respectively. The year 2019 is printed in small numerals to the upper right. The vertical security thread is visible as a dark embedded stripe running through the note approximately one-third from the left edge.
The reverse of the note is dominated by a large central engraved vignette depicting the Wassu Stone Circles, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in central Gambia. The scene shows a grouping of ancient laterite megalithic stones arranged in circular formation, rendered with detailed monochrome engraving in dark tones against a lighter background that suggests open sky and distant trees rendered in blue and violet wash. The stones vary in height and shape, and the composition captures both the grandeur and the archaeological significance of the site. The background of the reverse continues the guilloché wave and lattice patterning seen on the front, predominantly in mid-violet and lavender tones, giving the note a consistent chromatic identity across both faces. In the upper left, the text “Central Bank of The Gambia” is printed in dark serif lettering, and the numeral “50” appears in the upper right corner in bold dark purple. To the lower left, the large numeral “50” is again printed prominently, accompanied by the written denomination “Fifty Dalasis” in clear serif text. A small outline illustration of a Helmeted Guinea Fowl appears to the lower right of the stone circles vignette, echoing the bird motif used on the front face. A decorative border of fine repeated arc patterns runs along the lower edge of the note. The overall reverse design balances cultural heritage imagery with the functional requirements of a modern secure banknote.
