About Gambian Dalasi Exchange

The Gambian Dalasi (GMD) is the official currency of The Gambia, the small West African nation that sits along the Gambia River and is a popular destination for British holidaymakers. We accept all denominations of Dalasi banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Gambian Dalasi Banknotes

The Central Bank of The Gambia issues a range of Dalasi banknotes featuring national imagery and security features including watermarks, security threads, and colour-shifting ink on higher denominations. We accept all current banknotes across every denomination, so whether you have smaller notes or higher-value ones left over from your trip, we can exchange them. If you also have other West African currency to exchange, we handle CFA Francs West Africa as well.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we accept withdrawn Dalasi banknotes from older series, as well as notes that are torn or worn, provided they are at least 50% intact. Rates for old or damaged notes are slightly lower than for current series, but we will always make you a fair offer. If you are also holding other older African currency, we exchange withdrawn notes such as Zambian Kwacha and Ugandan Shillings.

Gambian Dalasi Coins

We also accept Gambian Dalasi coins, including the smaller butut denominations that circulate alongside the banknotes. Rates for coins are slightly lower than for notes due to the additional handling costs involved, but unlike most banks and bureaux de change, we will not turn them away.

Why Exchange With Us?

  • Competitive exchange rates updated daily
  • Accept coins and damaged notes that banks won’t take

Gambian Dalasi Exchange FAQ

Do you accept Gambian Dalasi left over from a holiday to The Gambia?

Yes, absolutely. The Gambia is one of the UK’s most popular winter sun destinations, and we regularly exchange leftover Dalasi brought back by British travellers. We accept all current denominations of banknotes as well as coins, so nothing from your trip needs to go to waste.

Can I exchange old or withdrawn Gambian Dalasi banknotes?

Yes, we accept older withdrawn series of Gambian Dalasi banknotes that the Central Bank of The Gambia no longer circulates. The rate offered will be slightly lower than for current notes, but as long as the note is at least 50% intact, we will make you an offer.

Do you exchange Gambian Dalasi coins as well as banknotes?

Yes. We accept Gambian Dalasi coins, including the smaller butut denominations. Most high street exchanges and UK banks will not accept foreign coins at all, so sending them to us is one of the few ways to get any value back from them. The exchange rate for coins is slightly lower than for notes due to handling costs.

How do I send my Gambian Dalasi and when will I be paid?

Simply box up your Dalasi banknotes and coins and post them to us yourself — many customers use a tracked postal service for peace of mind. Once we receive and verify your currency, we will pay you within 5 working days by bank transfer or PayPal. If you are not happy with our offer for any reason, we will return your currency to you free of charge.

Is the Gambian Dalasi difficult to exchange in the UK?

Yes, the Dalasi is not widely traded in the UK and most high street banks and bureaux de change will not accept it. Specialist services like ours are the most practical option for converting leftover Dalasi back into sterling. If you have other less common African currencies alongside your Dalasi, we also exchange currencies such as Kenyan Shillings and Nigerian Naira.
