100 Lari Lari (Issued 2004-2014)

Surviving examples of the 2004–2014 series 100 Lari banknote are increasingly difficult to encounter in circulated or uncirculated form outside Georgia, as successive currency updates have drawn the majority of these notes out of everyday use. The Georgian National Bank’s gradual replacement programme, combined with the note’s relatively high denomination encouraging careful handling rather than casual circulation, means that well-preserved specimens are far from commonplace. Historians and currency researchers have taken a sustained interest in this issue because it represents a formative chapter in Georgia’s post-Soviet monetary identity, capturing the aesthetic choices the country made during a period of significant economic and political consolidation. The combination of medieval Georgian cultural imagery and modern security printing has given this note a distinct character within the Lari series.

On the front, the dominant feature is a large, finely engraved portrait of Queen Tamar of Georgia, the celebrated twelfth-century monarch regarded as one of the greatest rulers in Georgian history, rendered in a detailed intaglio style that conveys sculptural depth through precisely controlled line work. The portrait occupies the right-hand portion of the note, depicting the queen in profile facing left, wearing an ornate crowned helmet-like headdress with layered detailing and a decorated collar visible at the base of the neck. The overall colour palette of the front is a muted olive-green and teal combination, with the engraved portrait appearing in darker tones of green and brown against a lighter background field. To the upper left, the issuing authority name is printed in Georgian Mkhedruli script, reading “საქართველო” — Georgia — in bold dark lettering. A vertical band of intricate ornamental guilloche patterning runs along the left edge, incorporating traditional Georgian geometric and knotwork motifs in a darker register. Centrally, a large guilloché rosette or sunburst pattern is visible as a background security element, rendered in fine pale lines radiating outward. The serial number G08878699 appears twice: once horizontally at lower left and once vertically along the upper right of the note, printed in dark ink. A small Georgian national flag emblem incorporating the cross motif appears near the lower right alongside the denomination numeral “100” in dark burgundy-brown, with the word “ლარი” (Lari) in Georgian script beneath it. Two signature lines from National Bank officials are printed in the central area. A small security feature box or windowed security thread is visible at the lower right, and a square optically variable device or foil element appears near the denomination numeral. The Bank of Georgia’s spiral emblem, a stylised Borjgali sun symbol, is clearly visible in the central left area.

The reverse presents a dramatic, richly engraved central composition dominated by a monumental relief sculpture depicting two large confronting winged creatures — lions or mythical beasts — rendered in extraordinary detail, their bodies arching symmetrically outward from a central decorative element that includes figural and foliate carving. This imagery is drawn from historic Georgian ecclesiastical or palace architectural ornamentation, reflecting the country’s medieval stone-carving tradition. The engraving is executed in very fine intaglio line work in shades of dark olive-green and brown-black, giving the sculptural relief a three-dimensional quality. Below the central carved panel, the text “GEORGIA. ONE HUNDRED LARI” is printed in clear Latin script, with the year “2008” appearing directly beneath in the same typeface, indicating a printing date within the series. The denomination “100” appears in large numerals to the lower right in dark reddish-brown, with “ლარი” in Georgian script below. To the upper left, “100 ლარი” is printed in smaller text. The background of the reverse is filled with fine guilloché wave patterns and latticework in pale olive tones, providing a layered security printing field. A small foil or optically variable square device is visible near the lower centre of the note. Watermark ghost images from the front portrait are partially visible through the paper when viewed against light, adding a further layer of security to the design.
