20 Lari Lari (Issued 2002-2013)

The 20 Lari banknote from Georgia’s 2002–2014 series remains current legal tender, forming part of the Lari system introduced following Georgia’s currency reforms of the 1990s. Issued from 2002 and circulating through to 2013 within this particular print series, the note represents a stable chapter in Georgian monetary history during a period of economic consolidation. Whilst later updated issues have followed, this series retains its legal status and continues to be held by travellers and those returning from Georgia to the United Kingdom. Anyone seeking to exchange these banknotes will find them accepted through specialist currency exchange services operating across Britain.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Akaki Tsereteli, the celebrated Georgian poet and public figure of the nineteenth century, positioned to the right of centre and rendered in detailed intaglio with strong tonal contrast against a pale ground. Tsereteli is depicted in formal attire with a dark jacket, a high collar, and a neatly trimmed beard and moustache, his expression dignified and composed. To the upper left of the portrait, an illustrated vignette depicts open manuscripts, a quill, an inkwell, and bound books rendered in warm brown and olive tones, referencing Tsereteli’s literary legacy. The background of the note carries fine guilloché patterning in soft blue and green hues, providing both decorative depth and an anti-counterfeiting function. The issuing authority’s name is printed in the Georgian Mkhedruli script along the left-hand vertical edge, reading “საქართველო” (Georgia), whilst the denomination “20” appears prominently in copper-orange numerals in the lower right corner, accompanied by the Georgian script “ოცი ლარი” beneath it. The serial number E03580037 is printed twice — once in black in the upper right area and once in the lower left — in clear serif numerals. The year of issue, 2002, appears near the top right of the note. A circular emblem of the National Bank of Georgia, rendered in golden-brown, appears to the left of centre. The paper carries a visible security thread embedded vertically through the note, and the overall colour palette transitions from cool blue-grey tones in the background through to warm brown and copper in the portrait and denomination areas.

The reverse presents a dramatic composition dominated by a large equestrian statue depicted in warm golden-brown intaglio engraving, showing a mounted rider raising one arm aloft on a rearing horse — a representation of the Vakhtang Gorgasali monument, the fifth-century Georgian king and founder of Tbilisi, whose statue stands prominently above the Mtkvari River in the Georgian capital. Behind and to the left of the statue, a detailed bird’s-eye cartographic view of the old city of Tbilisi is engraved with fine linework, capturing the historic rooftops, river bends, and urban geography of the city in soft brown and olive tones. To the right of the equestrian figure, a large radiating sun-burst pattern rendered in pale yellow and cream guilloché occupies the upper right quadrant, providing visual contrast and security complexity. In the lower right corner, a skyline vignette depicts the distinctive Metekhi Church perched on its cliff above the river, engraved in delicate blue-grey lines. The denomination “20” appears in the upper right in copper-brown numerals matching the front, and the text “GEORGIA. TWENTY LARI” is printed in Roman script along the lower left edge alongside the Georgian Mkhedruli equivalent “ოცი ლარი”. The serial number is faintly visible in mirror through the paper from the front, and the overall tonal palette of the reverse moves from warm golden-brown in the central statue through to cooler blue-grey tones across the cityscape and architectural vignette.
