10 Greek Drachmas coin (Democritus)

10 Drachmas — Democritus (Issued 1976)

The 10 drachmas was a mid-value coin of the Greek drachma, the currency Greece used until the euro replaced it in 2002. Struck in cupronickel with a silvery finish and a reeded edge, this type honoured the ancient philosopher Democritus, remembered for his early theory of the atom.

On the obverse, a portrait of Democritus faces left, with his name “ΔΗΜΟΚΡΙΤΟΣ” inscribed around the edge.

On the reverse, a stylised representation of an atom — a nucleus circled by orbiting electrons — alludes to his atomic ideas, with the large numeral “10” and the word “ΔΡΑΧΜΕΣ”, the legend “ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ” (Hellenic Republic) around and the year 1976.
