2 Greek Drachmas coin (Georgios Karaiskakis)

2 Drachmas — Georgios Karaiskakis (Issued 1982)

The 2 drachmas was a minor coin of the Greek drachma, the currency Greece used until the euro replaced it in 2002. Struck in nickel-brass with a golden tone and reeded edge, this type honoured Georgios Karaiskakis, one of the leading generals of the 1821 War of Independence.

On the obverse, a portrait of Georgios Karaiskakis faces left, shown in period dress and cap, with his name “ΓΕΩΡΓΙΟΣ ΚΑΡΑΪΣΚΑΚΗΣ” inscribed around the edge.

On the reverse, a trophy of crossed muskets with a powder horn and sprig represents the weapons of the revolutionary fighters, with “ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ” around, the word “ΔΡΑΧΜΕΣ” and the numeral “2” beneath, with the year 1982.
