5 Greek Drachmas coin (Aristotle)

5 Drachmas — Aristotle (Issued 1978)

The 5 drachmas was a minor coin of the Greek drachma, the currency Greece used until the euro replaced it in 2002. Struck in cupronickel with a silvery finish and a reeded edge, this type belonged to the series pairing everyday coins with figures from Greek history and thought.

On the obverse, a portrait of the philosopher Aristotle faces left, with his name “ΑΡΙΣΤΟΤΕΛΗΣ” inscribed around the edge.

On the reverse, a large numeral “5” sits above the word “ΔΡΑΧΜΕΣ”, with the legend “ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ” (Hellenic Republic) curving around and the year 1978 at the foot.
