Guernsey 50 Pence (Issued 1997)

The Guernsey fifty-pence coin belongs to the island’s own decimal coinage, equal in value to the British 50p but with Guernsey designs. Struck in cupro-nickel as a seven-sided coin with a plain edge, it was the largest of the everyday circulating coins and easy to identify by its shape. Guernsey mints its own currency under the crown to circulate alongside sterling.

On the obverse is the crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf facing right, with the legend “ELIZABETH II BAILIWICK OF GUERNSEY” and the small shield of Guernsey — three lions beneath a leafy sprig — beside the effigy.

On the reverse is a spray of Guernsey freesias, the fragrant flowers long associated with the island’s growers, with the inscription “FIFTY PENCE”, the year, and the numeral “50” below.
