5 Lempiras Lempira (Issued 2000-2004)
A security thread is embedded within the paper of this 5 Lempiras note, running vertically through the note as a thin metallic strip that becomes visible when held to the light. The paper itself carries a watermark consistent with Banco Central de Honduras issues of this period, providing a primary layer of anti-counterfeiting protection at a time when Central American central banks were reinforcing the integrity of their circulating currencies. The note was printed by the Canadian Bank Note Company, whose imprint is visible on the reverse, a firm long trusted by Latin American monetary authorities for high-quality intaglio and lithographic banknote production. These combined features reflect the security standards applied to the regional currency infrastructure during the early 2000s.
On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Francisco Morazán, the celebrated Central American statesman and military leader who championed the federation of Central American states in the nineteenth century, with his name printed clearly beneath the portrait to the right of the note. The portrait is rendered in detailed intaglio engraving, showing Morazán in side profile facing left, dressed in a dark coat with a white collar, his expression composed and authoritative. The overall colour palette of the front is a soft blend of pale lilac, green, and light blue, with guilloché patterning forming intricate background rosettes across the central field. To the left of centre sits the national coat of arms of Honduras, an oval shield depicting a mountainous landscape with trees, a rising sun, and a quiver of arrows, surrounded by an oval band bearing the text “REPUBLICA DE HONDURAS, C.A.” and “LIBRE, SOBERANA E INDEPENDIENTE.” The large numeral “5” appears prominently in the centre of the note in a stylised typeface, accompanied by the text “CINCO LEMPIRAS” in bold serif lettering below it. At the top of the note, the issuing authority is clearly stated in two lines: “REPUBLICA DE HONDURAS, C.A.” above and “BANCO CENTRAL DE HONDURAS” below, both in strong capitalised typography. The serial number AQ0228186 is printed twice in green ink, once to the left and once to the lower right. A date of 23 de Enero de 2003 is printed in small text near the upper centre of the note. Three signature lines appear across the lower portion of the note, labelled “PRESIDENTA,” “GERENTE,” and “SECRETARIO DE FINANZAS,” each accompanied by a handwritten facsimile signature.
The reverse presents a dramatic, densely composed intaglio scene depicting the Batalla de la Trinidad, identified by the caption “BATALLA DE LA TRINIDAD, NOVIEMBRE 11 DE 1827” printed along the lower centre of the note. The scene is rendered entirely in deep indigo and dark blue-violet tones, with two distinct panels of battle action separated by a narrow vertical division. The left panel shows a chaotic cavalry and infantry engagement, with mounted soldiers, weapons raised, and figures in conflict across a landscape backdrop that suggests trees and terrain. The right panel continues the battle narrative with infantry soldiers in close combat, fallen figures visible in the foreground, conveying the intensity of this historical engagement in which Morazán’s forces played a decisive role. The engraving style is rich in fine line detail, with cross-hatching used to define shadow and depth across the figures and background. At the top of the reverse, the text “BANCO CENTRAL DE HONDURAS” appears in clear capitalised lettering, and the denomination “CINCO LEMPIRAS” is stated in the lower right area. A large numeral “5” in guilloché form appears at the far right of the reverse, and the Canadian Bank Note Company imprint is visible in small text at the lower right margin.
