The one-dollar coin was one of the mainstays of everyday spending in Hong Kong under British administration. Struck in cupro-nickel with a silvery finish and a security-milled edge, it was a solid, medium-sized coin built to withstand constant handling in a busy trading city. This design belongs to the final years before the royal portrait was replaced on Hong Kong coinage in 1993.
On the obverse is the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Raphael Maklouf facing right, with the legend “QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND” around the rim.
On the reverse is a crowned heraldic lion holding a pearl, a device drawn from the arms of Hong Kong, encircled by “HONG KONG” and “ONE DOLLAR” together with the Chinese characters for Hong Kong and one dollar, and the year.
