This ten-cent piece belongs to the early colonial coinage of Hong Kong struck during the reign of Queen Victoria, when the small silver coins of the colony circulated widely in southern China as well as locally. Struck in silver, it is a small, bright coin with a finely toothed border and a reeded edge, and survives today as a collectable relic of nineteenth-century Hong Kong.

On the obverse, the coin carries the crowned and draped bust of Queen Victoria facing left, with the legend “VICTORIA QUEEN” curving around the rim and a beaded border within the toothed edge.

On the reverse, the value is shown in both languages: “HONG KONG” arcs across the top, “TEN CENTS” runs along the foot, and the Chinese characters reading “Hong Kong ten cents” fill the centre within a circle of beads, with the date “1888” to the right.
