The ten-dollar coin was the highest-value circulating coin in Hong Kong and the first to use a two-metal, bimetallic construction. It has a silvery cupro-nickel outer ring around a golden-toned centre, with a decorated and lettered edge as a security feature. Introduced in the mid-1990s, its designs no longer carried a royal portrait, in keeping with Hong Kong’s move to neutral imagery.

On the obverse is the bauhinia, the five-petalled flower of the Hong Kong orchid tree that serves as the territory’s floral emblem, shown as a full bloom.

On the reverse is the large numeral “10” over the words “TEN DOLLARS”, with the Chinese characters for the value and the year, set across the two-tone bimetallic field.
