This silver twenty cents was struck during the reign of Queen Victoria, when Hong Kong was a British colony producing its own subsidiary silver coinage for regional commerce. Made of silver with a reeded edge, it was slightly larger than the ten cents and served as a mid-value piece in daily circulation. Like other colonial issues of the era, it pairs a British obverse legend with Chinese characters on the reverse.

On the obverse, the coin carries the crowned bust of Queen Victoria facing left, wearing a jewelled crown, a beaded diadem and drapery tied with a ribbon at the back. The surrounding legend reads “VICTORIA QUEEN” in raised capitals, with a small mintmark letter “H” beneath the bust and a beaded border around the rim.

On the reverse, “HONG KONG” arcs across the top and “TWENTY CENTS” runs along the foot, with the date “1883” to the right. At the centre, within a beaded circle, are the Chinese characters giving the country name and value, reading the equivalent of Hong Kong and two mace.
