5 Hong Kong Dollars (Issued 1998)

The five-dollar coin is one of the larger circulating coins of Hong Kong, a thick, heavy cupro-nickel piece with a bright silvery colour and a securely milled, lettered edge. It belongs to the Bauhinia series introduced from 1993, which replaced the earlier coinage carrying the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Its weight and size make it a substantial coin in everyday use.

On the obverse, the coin shows the stylised Bauhinia blakeana flower, the emblem of Hong Kong, with five sweeping petals. The Chinese characters for Hong Kong sit at the top and the words “HONG KONG” run along the lower rim.

On the reverse, a large numeral “5” fills the centre above the date “1998”, with “FIVE DOLLARS” inscribed around the lower edge and the Chinese characters for five dollars in the upper field.
