5 Icelandic Aurar (Issued 1940)
The 5-aurar coin was a small copper denomination of Iceland, worth five aurar of a króna, dating from the period when Iceland shared a monarch with Denmark before becoming a republic in 1944. Struck in bronze, it has a warm reddish-brown colour, a small flan and a plain edge, and its modest size marks it as one of the lowest everyday coins of the early Icelandic coinage.
On the obverse, the coin shows the crowned royal monogram of King Christian X, formed from the interlaced letters “C” and “X” beneath a crown, with the date split as “19” and “40” to either side. The legend “ISLANDS KONUNGUR” — King of Iceland — curves around the rim.
On the reverse, a large numeral “5” stands at the centre with the country name “ISLAND” above and the word “AURAR” below, flanked by small decorative lozenge ornaments.
