The five-kronur coin belongs to the Icelandic coinage introduced with the 1981 currency reform, a series famous for its marine and mythological designs. Struck in cupro-nickel with a silvery finish and a reeded edge, it was a solid everyday coin. Its two faces bring together Iceland’s legendary guardians and its rich coastal waters.
On the obverse are the four guardian spirits of Iceland (landvættir) — the eagle, the dragon, the bull and the rock-giant — set within a quartered shield, with the legend “FIMM KRÓNUR”, the country name “ÍSLAND” and the year.
On the reverse are three leaping dolphins, one of the sea creatures that feature across the series, with the value “5 KR”.
