5.000 Rupees Rupee (Issued 18xx)

The Bank of Western India issued notes across several denominations during the mid-nineteenth century, and this Five Thousand Rupees specimen belongs to what was among the highest values in that early commercial banking series. As a promise-to-pay instrument, it follows the conventions of British-influenced colonial banking, sharing design continuity with other denominations from the same institution through its formal engraved typography and neoclassical architectural vignette. The Five Thousand Rupees denomination was intended for large mercantile transactions, placing it at the apex of the series and distinguishing it from lower-value notes used in everyday commerce. This example is marked as a specimen, indicating it was produced for presentation or record purposes rather than general circulation.

On the front, the note is printed in sepia and warm brown tones on cream-coloured paper, giving it the characteristic appearance of mid-nineteenth-century steel-engraved banknote production. At the very top, bold serif lettering reads “BANK OF WESTERN INDIA”, flanked on either side by ornamental panels bearing the denomination figure “5000” rendered in stylised numerals within decorative cartouches. The central vignette is a finely engraved landscape scene depicting a large neoclassical building with a colonnaded portico, surrounded by palm trees and smaller structures to either side, with an open foreground suggestive of a Bombay streetscape or institutional compound. Below this vignette, the issuing text is laid out in a combination of copperplate script and bold display type: the words “THE BANK OF WESTERN INDIA” appear in large capitals, followed by the promise-to-pay legend in flowing script reading “Promises to pay the Bearer on demand”, then “FIVE THOUSAND RUPEES, Value received” in emphatic mixed typography. A serial number field beginning with “No.” appears on the left, the place of issue “BOMBAY” is printed centrally, and a partial date reading “184” is visible, with a second “No.” field to the right. Below these fields, two columns are headed “Ent.d” and “Acc.t” on the left side. A decorative rectangular panel in the lower left contains the denomination inscription “FIVE THOUSAND RUPEES” set within scrollwork borders. To the right of centre, the authorisation text reads “BY ORDER OF THE BOARD” followed by the names “BATHO & BINGLEY” and the word “SPECIMEN” printed prominently, with “MANAGING DIRECTOR” appearing beneath. The outer border of the entire note consists of a repeating geometric guilloche pattern forming a frame, with corner ornaments that echo the side cartouches. A small printer’s imprint is visible along the lower edge of the vignette area, consistent with British security printing firms of the period.

The reverse of this specimen note appears to be unprinted, presenting the plain cream-coloured paper surface without additional vignettes, text, or security overprints, which was standard practice for specimen and proof examples of colonial-era banknotes from this period. The texture and weight of the paper are consistent with the laid or wove stock used by British-contracted banknote printers working for Indian commercial banks in the 1840s, and faint show-through from the engraved front impression is visible when the note is viewed against light, confirming the depth of the intaglio printing used on the obverse.
