2000 Indonesian Rupiah (Heroes 2016)

The 2,000 Indonesian Rupiah banknote from the 2016 Heroes series forms part of Indonesia’s modern banknote redesign that combines national history with advanced security features. Issued by Bank Indonesia, this note remains legal tender in Indonesia but is frequently exchanged outside the country due to circulation changes and redesigns.
The front of the banknote features a finely detailed engraved portrait of Mohammad Hoesni Thamrin, a prominent Indonesian national hero and political figure. He is shown facing slightly to the right, wearing a formal suit, rendered in precise intaglio lines typical of modern Indonesian currency. Surrounding the portrait are layered geometric patterns, microtext, and soft pastel colour transitions in grey-green and beige tones. The denomination “2000” appears clearly in Arabic numerals, alongside “Dua Ribu Rupiah,” the Garuda Pancasila national emblem, and the printed signatures of Bank Indonesia officials. A vertical security strip and watermark area are integrated into the design for authentication.
The reverse depicts a traditional cultural scene associated with West Sumatra, showing a dancer in ceremonial Minangkabau attire holding a plate, representing the Tari Piring (Plate Dance). The background includes a stylised landscape with rolling hills and floral motifs, executed in warm yellow and soft green hues. The denomination is repeated on the reverse, with serial numbers, tactile elements, and additional micro-patterning that enhances both visual depth and security.
Although still valid in Indonesia, the 2016 Heroes Series 2,000 Rupiah note is commonly found among leftover travel money and collections. Many banks and currency bureau services do not handle lower-denomination Indonesian notes, particularly older series, which leads individuals and organisations to seek specialist exchange services.
