20000 Indonesian Rupiah (2009 – 2016)
£0.200000
1 IDR = £0.000010
The 20,000 Indonesian Rupiah banknote issued between 2009 and 2016 forms part of Bank Indonesia’s pre-2016 series, a family of notes that combined national heroes with scenes of everyday life and Indonesia’s rich agricultural heritage. This series was widely used prior to the 2016 redesign and remains recognisable by its softer colour palette, detailed intaglio engraving, and traditional visual storytelling.
On the front of the banknote, the dominant feature is the engraved portrait of Oto Iskandar di Nata, a respected Indonesian national hero known for his role in the independence movement. His portrait is rendered in fine linework, set slightly left of centre, with a calm and dignified expression. Surrounding the portrait are intricate guilloché patterns and layered geometric motifs that provide both visual depth and security. The denomination “20000” appears clearly in multiple positions, accompanied by “DUA PULUH RIBU RUPIAH” and the Bank Indonesia name. A vertical security thread, watermark area, and latent design elements are incorporated into the background, along with official signatures and the national emblem, reinforcing the note’s authenticity.
The reverse of the note focuses on Indonesia’s rural and economic life. It depicts agricultural workers wearing traditional conical hats, shown harvesting and carrying produce in woven baskets. This scene symbolises productivity, community, and the importance of agriculture to Indonesia’s economy. The background features softly shaded fields and stylised patterns that mirror those on the front, creating a cohesive design. The denomination “20000” is repeated, along with Bank Indonesia text and additional security features such as micro-text and colour-shifting details, depending on print run.
