50000 Indonesian Rupiah (2009 – 2016)

£0.500000

1 IDR = £0.000010

The 50,000 Indonesian Rupiah banknote issued between 2009 and 2016 forms part of Indonesia’s pre-Redesign currency family and reflects a strong emphasis on national heritage, historic leadership, and cultural landmarks. Widely circulated during its issue period, this denomination remains one of the most recognisable high-value Indonesian banknotes encountered outside Indonesia today, particularly among travellers, collectors, and organisations handling overseas cash holdings.

On the reverse of the note, the design is dominated by a detailed engraved depiction of Pura Taman Ayun, a historic Balinese water temple complex and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The multi-tiered meru shrines rise prominently above the surrounding water features, rendered in fine blue-toned intaglio lines. Traditional Balinese architecture, layered roofs, and calm water reflections are carefully balanced with ornamental security patterns and flowing wave motifs along the left margin. The denomination “50,000” appears clearly in the lower right corner, while intricate guilloche patterns and micro-text contribute to the banknote’s security and visual depth.

The obverse features a formal engraved portrait of I Gusti Ketut Pudja, an Indonesian national hero and key figure in the early formation of the Indonesian state. The portrait is set against a layered background of geometric security patterns, colour-shifting elements, and fine line engraving typical of Bank Indonesia issues from this era. The Garuda Pancasila national emblem is positioned in the upper right, reinforcing the note’s official status, while serial numbers appear in contrasting ink for enhanced authentication. The denomination “50,000” is repeated vertically and horizontally, integrated seamlessly into the overall design.
