50 Indonesian Rupiah (Issued 1998)

The 50-rupiah coin was a small circulating denomination of Indonesia, struck in aluminium-bronze with a warm golden colour, a light flan and a plain edge. Part of the wildlife series of the 1990s, it was a familiar low-value coin before rising prices and newer coinage gradually pushed it out of everyday use. Its bright colour and small size made it easy to recognise in change.

On the obverse, the coin carries the Garuda Pancasila, the national emblem of Indonesia — a stylised Garuda eagle bearing the quartered state shield on its breast. The date “1998” appears below and the words “BANK INDONESIA” curve around the lower rim.

On the reverse, a Komodo dragon is shown striding across rocky ground, with the value “Rp 50” above and the word “Komodo” inscribed along the foot, celebrating one of Indonesia’s most famous native animals.
