The five-hundred-rupiah coin was one of Indonesia’s higher-value circulating coins, first issued in the early 1990s. Struck in a golden aluminium-bronze alloy with a reeded edge, it had a warm colour and a solid feel that marked it out from the lighter, lower-value coins. Its reverse features a flower of deep national significance.
On the obverse are the words “BANK INDONESIA”, the denomination “500 RUPIAH”, the year, and the Garuda Pancasila, the national emblem of Indonesia.
On the reverse is a jasmine flower (bunga melati), one of Indonesia’s national flowers, shown in bloom with the name “BUNGA MELATI”.
