The Irish one-pound coin was the highest-value everyday coin of the Republic’s decimal coinage, in use from 1990 until the euro replaced the punt in 2002. Struck in cupro-nickel with a silvery finish and a milled edge, it was a large, solid coin that stood out from the smaller denominations. Its reverse features one of Ireland’s most striking animals.
On the obverse is the Irish harp, the Brian Boru harp that is the emblem of Ireland, with the country name “ÉIRE” to the left and the year to the right.
On the reverse is a red deer stag, a native of the Irish hills, with the denomination.
