The Irish two-pence coin was part of the Republic’s decimal coinage, in circulation from 1971 until Ireland adopted the euro in 2002. Struck in bronze with a coppery colour and a plain edge, it was a hard-working small-change coin. Its designs pair the national emblem with the ornament of early Irish art.

On the obverse is the Irish harp, the Brian Boru harp that serves as the emblem of Ireland, with the country name “ÉIRE” to the left and the year to the right.

On the reverse is a stylised ornamental bird taken from a decorated initial in a medieval Irish manuscript, with the numeral “2”.
