5 Pence Ireland (Issued 1992)

The Irish five-pence coin belonged to the Republic’s decimal coinage, in use from 1971 until the euro changeover in 2002. Struck in cupro-nickel with a silvery finish and a milled edge, it was a small, durable coin for everyday change. Its reverse carries an animal design rooted in Ireland’s earlier coinage tradition.

On the obverse is the Irish harp, the Brian Boru harp that is the emblem of Ireland, with the country name “ÉIRE” to the left and the year to the right.

On the reverse is a bull, a design continued from the celebrated animal coinage first introduced in 1928, with the numeral “5”.
