The Irish farthing was the smallest denomination of the pre-decimal Irish coinage, worth a quarter of an old penny. Struck in bronze with a plain edge, it was a small, light coin that formed part of the distinctive animal series designed for the Irish Free State and later Republic. By the late 1950s it was already a minor piece, its low value reflecting decades of use.

On the obverse, the coin carries the Irish harp, the emblem of the state, shown with a decorated fore-pillar. The country name “ÉIRE” runs down the left side and the date “1959” down the right, all within a beaded border.

On the reverse, from Percy Metcalfe’s celebrated animal series, appears a woodcock in flight with its long bill lowered. The value “1/4” with a small “d” sits at the upper left, and the Irish word “FEOIRLING”, meaning farthing, is inscribed along the foot, with the designer’s initials “PM” beside the bird.
