The Irish florin, or two-shilling piece, was one of the larger silver-coloured coins of the pre-decimal Irish series. This 1954 example was struck in cupronickel with a milled edge, a broad and solid coin well suited to everyday commerce. It formed part of the animal coinage that gave the Irish pound its distinctive identity in the decades before decimalisation.

On the obverse, the coin carries the Irish harp, the national emblem, with a decorated fore-pillar. The country name “ÉIRE” runs down the left side and the date “1954” down the right, all within a beaded border.

On the reverse, from Percy Metcalfe’s animal series, appears a salmon leaping, shown mid-arc across the field. The Irish word “FLÓIRÍN”, meaning florin, is inscribed across the lower centre, with the value “2s” beneath it and the designer’s initials “PM” to the lower left.
