Irish Half-Crown (Issued 1967)

The Irish half-crown was the largest of the pre-decimal Irish coins, valued at two shillings and sixpence. Struck in cupronickel with a milled edge, it was a broad, substantial piece that carried real purchasing power in everyday circulation. It belonged to the animal coinage series that gave the Irish pound its distinctive national character before decimalisation.

On the obverse, the coin carries the Irish harp, the emblem of the state, with a decorated fore-pillar. The country name “ÉIRE” runs down the left side and the date “1967” down the right, all within a beaded border.

On the reverse, from Percy Metcalfe’s animal series, appears an Irish hunter horse standing in profile. The Irish inscription for half-crown is set above and to the left of the horse, with the value “2/6” placed below it along the foot and the designer’s initials “PM” to the right.
