Irish Ten Shillings (Easter Rising Jubilee, 1966)

This silver ten shilling coin was issued in 1966 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Easter Rising of 1916, and it was the only commemorative coin of the Irish predecimal pound. Struck in a .833 silver alloy, it is a large, weighty crown-sized piece with a bright, reflective surface, produced for the jubilee rather than for heavy everyday circulation. It belongs to the pounds, shillings and pence system used in Ireland before decimalisation in 1971.

On the obverse, a portrait of Patrick Pearse, leader of the Rising, faces right in a plain field. The name of the state “ÉIRE” is inscribed to the left, balanced by the year “1966” to the right, with small pellets marking the top and bottom of the design.

On the reverse appears Oliver Sheppard’s celebrated statue of the dying Cú Chulainn, the mythological hero bound to a rock in his final stand, with a bird of the war-goddess perched upon his shoulder. The Irish-language legend “DEIC SCILLING”, meaning ten shillings, curves around the figure.
