The 10 agorot coin belongs to the New Sheqel series that Israel introduced from 1985, when the New Sheqel replaced the inflation-ravaged old shekel at a rate of one thousand to one. Struck in a golden aluminium-bronze alloy, the small round coin has a warm yellow tone, a smooth edge and a light, thin feel suited to low-value everyday change. On the obverse, the coin reproduces an ancient seven-branched menorah, copied from a design found on a coin of the last Hasmonean king Mattathias Antigonus. A raised rim frames the field.

On the reverse, a large numeral “10” stands against a finely hatched square panel, with the Hebrew word for agorot around it and “AGOROT” in Latin capitals. The Hebrew date, here reading התשס”ט (5769, corresponding to 2009), appears at the foot below the value.
