Half New Sheqel (Issued 1992)

The half new sheqel is one of the higher small denominations of Israel’s New Sheqel coinage, introduced from the mid-1980s after the currency reform that created the New Sheqel. Struck in a golden aluminium-bronze alloy, it is a fairly large, solid round coin with a smooth edge and a warm yellow colour that sets it apart from the silver-toned pieces in the same series.

On the obverse, the coin shows a lyre — an ancient stringed instrument, or kinnor, based on designs found on coins of the Bar Kokhba period — with its curved frame, strings and a decorative rosette on the sound box. To the right sits the small state emblem of Israel, a menorah flanked by olive branches, above the Hebrew word for Israel.

On the reverse, the value dominates the field as a large “½” above the Hebrew words “שקל חדש” and the Latin inscription “NEW SHEQEL”. Around the upper edge the country name is repeated in Hebrew, Arabic and as “ISRAEL” in Latin capitals, framing the denomination.
