5,000 Sheqalim Sheqel (Issued 1984)
The 5,000 Sheqalim note of 1984 belongs to the short-lived Sheqel series introduced following Israel’s 1980 currency reform, which replaced the pound with the Sheqel at a rate of ten to one. Issued by the Bank of Israel, this denomination sits at the higher end of the Sheqel series and shares the characteristic blue-dominant palette and intaglio portrait engraving style seen across the family of notes produced during this period. The series was ultimately withdrawn when hyperinflation prompted a further redenomination in 1985, introducing the New Sheqel at a rate of 1,000 old Sheqalim to one. This 5,000 Sheqalim denomination is distinguished by its depiction of Levi Eshkol, Israel’s third Prime Minister, and its imagery celebrating Israeli water infrastructure.
On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Levi Eshkol, Israel’s third Prime Minister, positioned to the right of centre. Eshkol is depicted wearing dark-framed spectacles and a dark suit with a white shirt and tie, rendered in detailed intaglio engraving that captures his facial structure with considerable precision. The portrait is set against a pale blue background, with the figure facing slightly to the left. To the left of the portrait, a detailed vignette depicts what appears to be an urban or architectural scene rendered in a multi-coloured palette of blues, greens, ochre, and grey tones, incorporating geometric and layered forms suggestive of buildings or a cityscape. The large numeral “5000” appears prominently in the upper left in bold dark blue typography, with a further smaller “5000” repeated in the lower right corner. The year 1984 is printed in small text near the top of the note, rendered in Hebrew script. The issuing authority is identified in Hebrew text reading “בנק ישראל” (Bank of Israel) in bold lettering in the lower left quadrant, beneath which the denomination is written in Hebrew as “חמשת אלפים שקלים” (Five Thousand Sheqalim). Two facsimile signatures of Bank of Israel officials appear in the lower central area of the note. The overall background incorporates fine guilloché patterning in pale blue and white tones, providing security texture across the face of the note.
The reverse of the note is printed primarily in shades of blue, grey, and green. The inscription “BANK OF ISRAEL” appears in English in the upper left, with the Arabic equivalent “بنك إسرائيل” printed directly below it. The numeral “5000” is displayed in the upper right corner in dark blue. A large and visually striking central vignette dominates the reverse, depicting what is clearly a large-diameter water pipeline or conduit rendered in a metallic grey and silver colour scheme, shown at an oblique angle that gives a strong three-dimensional impression. The open circular end of the pipe faces the viewer. Behind and above the pipeline, the background transitions into a stylised landscape featuring blue undulating hills or terrain, layered in varying shades of blue, green, and purple, with a winding road or waterway visible receding into the distance. This imagery is understood to represent the National Water Carrier of Israel, a major engineering project associated with Levi Eshkol’s premiership. The serial number “6208896402” appears twice on the reverse — once in the lower left area and once in the lower right — printed in dark blue ink. The denomination “5000” is repeated in large numerals at the lower left, with the word “SHEQALIM” printed beneath in English, and the Arabic “شيקل” appearing to the lower right. Fine horizontal line patterns and guilloché work are visible across the background of the reverse, reinforcing the note’s security printing.
