About Israeli Pounds Exchange

The Israeli Pound (IL£) is a historic currency that was used in Israel from 1948 until 1980, when it was replaced first by the Israeli Old Sheqel and later by the Israeli New Sheqel, which remains in use today. We accept all denominations of Israeli Pound banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.

Current Israeli Pound Banknotes

The Israeli Pound was fully withdrawn from circulation in 1980 and is no longer legal tender anywhere in the world, so there are no current series banknotes in issue. Any Israeli Pound banknotes you hold are withdrawn notes, and we are happy to exchange them for British pounds regardless of denomination or condition.

Old Series & Damaged Notes

Unlike most high street exchanges, we specialise in exactly this kind of withdrawn currency. Israeli Pound banknotes were issued across a range of denominations during the currency’s three decades of circulation, and we accept all of them. Notes should be at least 50% intact to qualify for exchange; heavily damaged notes may be accepted at a slightly reduced rate. If you also have other historic Middle Eastern currencies to exchange, we handle Jordanian Dinars and a wide range of other withdrawn and exotic currencies.

Israeli Pound Coins

We also accept Israeli Pound coins, including the smaller agorot denominations that were issued alongside the banknotes. Coins are exchanged at a slightly lower rate than banknotes due to the additional handling costs involved, but unlike many exchanges and banks, we won’t turn them away.

Why Exchange With Us?

  • Competitive exchange rates updated daily
  • Accept coins and damaged notes that banks won’t take
  • We verify your currency and pay you within 5 working days
  • No hidden fees or charges

Israeli Pound Exchange FAQ

Is the Israeli Pound still legal tender?

No. The Israeli Pound was withdrawn from circulation in 1980 when Israel introduced the Old Sheqel as its replacement currency. It has not been legal tender for over four decades, which means Israeli banks and high street exchanges in the UK will not accept it — but we will.

What replaced the Israeli Pound?

The Israeli Pound was replaced in 1980 by the Israeli Old Sheqel, which was itself replaced in 1986 by the Israeli New Sheqel, the currency Israel uses today. We can exchange all three currencies, so if you have a mix of old Israeli notes, we can help with each.

Can I exchange Israeli Pound coins as well as banknotes?

Yes. We accept both Israeli Pound banknotes and coins, including the smaller agorot denominations. Coins are exchanged at a slightly lower rate than banknotes to reflect handling costs, but you are welcome to send them along with any notes you have.

How do I send my Israeli Pounds to you?

Simply pack your Israeli Pound notes and coins securely and post them to us yourself. Once we receive and verify your currency, we will pay you within 5 working days via bank transfer or PayPal. If for any reason you are not happy with our offer, we will return your currency to you free of charge.

My Israeli Pound notes are quite worn — will you still accept them?

Yes, in most cases. We accept damaged and worn Israeli Pound banknotes provided they are at least 50% intact. Given how old these notes are, some wear is entirely expected, and we assess each note individually. If you are unsure whether a particularly damaged note qualifies, feel free to contact us before sending.
