100 Italian Lire (Minerva, Small Type)

The 100 lire carried the classic Minerva design for much of the post-war period, and in 1990 a reduced ‘small’ version was issued to modernise the series and lighten the coin. It was struck in acmonital, a stainless-steel alloy that gave it a durable silvery finish suited to heavy circulation. A reeded edge aided recognition. Like the rest of the lira coinage, it was withdrawn when the euro was introduced in 2002.

On the obverse appears a youthful female head personifying the Italian Republic, facing left and wreathed in laurel, with the legend “REPVBBLICA ITALIANA” around the rim and the engravers’ signatures in tiny letters below the neck.

On the reverse, from Giuseppe Romagnoli’s composition, the helmeted goddess Minerva stands in flowing robes, her left hand resting on a tall spear while her right reaches out to touch a growing olive tree. The value “L.100” is placed at lower left, the year below and the mint mark “R” for Rome at the right.
