100 Lire (Issued 1974)

The 100 lire was one of the workhorse coins of the Italian Republic, its familiar Minerva design first struck in 1955 and continuing for decades. Made of acmonital, a stainless steel alloy, it has a bright silvery colour, a reeded edge and a light, hard-wearing feel that suited its role in everyday transactions.

On the obverse, a laureate female head personifying Italy faces left, her hair loose behind a wreath, encircled by the legend “REPVBBLICA ITALIANA”. The designers’ names, Romagnoli and Giampaoli, appear in tiny letters beneath the neck.

On the reverse, the goddess Minerva stands in classical drapery and a plumed helmet, holding a long spear in one hand and extending the other towards a slender olive tree that grows beside her. The value “L.100” sits to the left at the foot, the date “1974” is centred below, and the mint mark “R” for Rome stands to the right.
