200 Lire (Issued 1998)

The 200 lire was introduced in 1977 and became one of the last widely used Italian coins before the changeover to the euro. Struck in a golden aluminium-bronze alloy, it has a warm yellow tone, a smooth edge and a solid mid-size feel, and its industrial reverse celebrated Italy’s manufacturing and design.

On the obverse, a stylised female head with a gathered ponytail faces right, surrounded by the legend “REPVBBLICA ITALIANA”. The designer’s signature “M. VALLUCCI” appears in small letters at the foot of the portrait.

On the reverse, a large cogwheel or gear fills the field, its teeth ringing the rim, with the value “200 LIRE” set within the smooth central disc. The date “1998” is inscribed below the gear and the mint mark “R” for Rome stands to the lower left, a modern emblem of engineering rather than the classical motifs of older lire.
