5 Centesimi (Issued 1925)

The 5 centesimi was a small bronze coin of the Kingdom of Italy, struck under Vittorio Emanuele III during the 1920s. Made of a copper-based bronze alloy, it has a rich reddish-brown tone, a plain edge and the modest weight of a low-value everyday piece. This type, nicknamed the “Spiga” for its ear of wheat, circulated widely as small change between the wars.

On the obverse, the coin carries the bare head of King Vittorio Emanuele III facing left, with the surrounding legend “VITTORIO EMANVELE III RE D’ITALIA” naming him King of Italy in raised capitals. The designer’s signature “A. MOTTI” appears in small letters below the truncation of the neck.

On the reverse, a single tall ear of wheat rises up the centre of the coin, its grains and stalk finely modelled. The value is given as “C. 5” flanking the stalk, with the date “1925” to the lower right and the mint mark “R” for Rome at the very bottom, marking a design that celebrated Italy’s agricultural life.
