50 Italian Lire (Vulcan, Small Type)

The 50 lire was one of Italy’s everyday workhorse coins, and in 1990 the Rome Mint introduced a reduced ‘small’ version of the long-running Vulcan design to make it lighter and quicker to handle. It was struck in acmonital, a stainless-steel alloy that kept a bright silvery surface and stood up well to constant handling, and shrank to a compact module. A reeded edge helped identification by touch. The type circulated until the lira gave way to the euro in 2002.

On the obverse appears a youthful female head personifying the Italian Republic, facing left and crowned with a laurel wreath, her hair swept back. The legend “REPVBBLICA ITALIANA” curves around the rim, with the engravers’ names Romagnoli and Giampaoli in tiny letters below the neck.

On the reverse, after Giuseppe Romagnoli’s classic composition, stands the nude figure of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire and metalworking, striking an anvil with a raised hammer. The value “L.50” sits to the right, the date to the left and the small mint mark “R” for Rome at the lower right.
