About Italian Lire Exchange
The Italian Lira (ITL) was the official currency of Italy for over 150 years before being replaced by the Euro in 2002. We accept all denominations of Italian Lire banknotes and coins, including older series and damaged notes.
Current Italian Lire Banknotes
Although the Italian Lira is no longer in circulation, the final series of banknotes — featuring celebrated Italian figures such as scientists, artists, and inventors — are fully exchangeable with us. We accept all denominations from this last series, including higher-value notes such as the 10,000 Lire (Alessandro Volta) and the 1,000 Lire (Maria Montessori).
Old Series & Damaged Notes
Unlike most high street exchanges, we also buy older and damaged Italian Lire banknotes. Notes such as the 2,000 Lire (Galileo), first issued in 1973, are among the earlier designs we regularly accept. As long as a note is at least 50% intact and identifiable, we will make you an offer — though the rate may be slightly lower for heavily worn or damaged notes. If you have other withdrawn European currencies to exchange, you might also find our pages on Spanish Pesetas, French Francs, or Deutsche Marks useful.
Italian Lire Coins
We accept Italian Lire coins alongside banknotes — something most banks and bureaux de change will not do. Because coins require additional handling and sorting, the exchange rate applied is slightly lower than for banknotes, but no denomination is too small to send in.
