1.000 Dollars Jamaican Dollar (Issued 2022)

The Bank of Jamaica, established under the Bank of Jamaica Act and serving as the island nation’s central monetary authority, issued this commemorative polymer banknote on 1 June 2022 to mark its sixtieth anniversary of operation. As the institution responsible for regulating currency, managing monetary policy, and maintaining financial stability across Jamaica, the Bank of Jamaica occupies a central role in the country’s economic sovereignty. This commemorative issue was produced specifically to honour six decades of central banking in Jamaica, making the date inscription “01.06.2022” visible on the note a deliberate acknowledgement of that milestone. The note bears the text “ISSUED UNDER THE BANK OF JAMAICA ACT” directly above the Governor’s signature, anchoring its legal authority within the nation’s legislative framework.

On the front, the note is printed on a polymer substrate in a predominant palette of cool blues and pale grey-blue tones, with subtle geometric and guilloché patterning providing a fine security background across the central field. Two portrait subjects appear side by side in engraved style against this background: on the left is Alexander Bustamante, Jamaica’s first Prime Minister and national hero, and on the right is Norman Manley, founder of the People’s National Party and another of Jamaica’s seven national heroes, both rendered with considerable detail in blue-toned intaglio engraving with fine facial shading. Below each portrait, their names are printed in small serif typeface — “Alexander Bustamante” and “Norman Manley” respectively. At the top centre, “BANK OF JAMAICA” is printed in bold serif lettering, with the legal issuance text and date printed beneath in smaller type, followed by a facsimile signature of the Governor. To the right of the portraits, a stylised “60” anniversary logo appears alongside text referencing the Bank of Jamaica’s sixtieth anniversary. The serial number “AA708403” appears twice — once vertically along the left edge in blue and once horizontally in the lower central field. The denomination “$1000” is printed prominently in the lower right in large bold numerals, with “One Thousand Dollars” in full along the lower left margin. A transparent security window strip runs along the right-hand edge of the note and contains an electrotype “BOJ” emblem at the base, above which a vivid blue and turquoise butterfly or stylised floral motif in full colour and a small repeating “BANK OF JAMAICA” microtext band appear as part of the windowed security feature. Within the security panel, a smaller reproduction of the two portrait subjects is also visible, mirroring the main face design.

The reverse continues the cool blue and pale azure colour scheme, with a detailed engraved depiction of Jamaica House, the official office of the Prime Minister of Jamaica, occupying the central vignette. The building is rendered with careful architectural linework showing a low-rise colonial-style structure with a broad frontage, palm trees and tropical vegetation to the left, and ornamental grounds with flagpoles to the right, all beneath a pale sky. The name “JAMAICA HOUSE” is printed in small capitals beneath the building image. “BANK OF JAMAICA” appears at the top centre in the same bold serif typography as the front, with “$1000” in large numerals to the upper right. “One Thousand Dollars” is printed in full along the lower right margin, and “1000” appears vertically in large numerals along the left side of the note. The same transparent security strip with the butterfly motif, portrait miniature, and “BOJ” electrotype visible on the front is also seen on the reverse, running along the left edge in the same vertical position. Microprinted “BANK OF JAMAICA” text runs vertically along the far right edge of the reverse as an additional security measure, and the overall surface retains the clean, slightly reflective quality characteristic of modern polymer banknote substrate.
