1 Cent Jamaica (Issued 1974)

The one-cent coin was the smallest denomination of Jamaica’s decimal currency, introduced with decimalisation in 1969. It was struck in bronze, giving it a warm reddish-brown colour and a light, handy feel for small change. A plain edge kept it simple and inexpensive to produce. The coin was eventually demonetised as inflation removed the need for the lowest values.

On the obverse stands the national coat of arms of Jamaica, a shield with a red cross bearing five golden pineapples, flanked by a Taíno man and woman and topped by a crocodile on the royal helm, with “JAMAICA” above, the date below and the motto “OUT OF MANY, ONE PEOPLE” on a scroll.

On the reverse appears the ackee, Jamaica’s national fruit, shown as a branch bearing open and closed pods among its leaves, with a small flower at the centre. The legend “ONE CENT” curves around the rim and the numeral “1” sits at the foot.
