1 Jamaican Dollar (Issued 1992)

The one-dollar coin served as one of the main higher-value pieces of Jamaica’s decimal coinage, standing in for the paper dollar in everyday transactions. It was struck in a golden nickel-brass alloy that gave it a warm tone and a firm, weighty feel able to withstand heavy use. A reeded edge helped distinguish it in the hand. It was in due course superseded by a later seven-sided version.

On the obverse is the full national arms of Jamaica, a shield charged with a red cross and five golden pineapples, supported by a Taíno man and woman, crested by a crocodile above the helm and log. “JAMAICA” arches above, with “ONE DOLLAR” and the year below and the motto “OUT OF MANY, ONE PEOPLE” on a ribbon.

On the reverse appears the portrait of Sir Alexander Bustamante, a Jamaican national hero and the country’s first Prime Minister, facing the viewer, his name curving around the rim and the dates “1884 – 1977” below.
