The ten-dollar coin answered the need for a higher everyday denomination in Jamaica as smaller values lost their purchasing power. It was struck in a silvery nickel-plated alloy, carrying a strong, deeply modelled design set within an ornamental scalloped rim that gives it an unmistakable outline. On the reverse appears the portrait of the Right Excellent George William Gordon, a Jamaican national hero, facing forward in a high-collared coat and spectacles, with his name and the words “NATIONAL HERO” around the border.
