2.000 Dollars Jamaican Dollar (Issued 2022)
Issued in 2022 to mark the sixtieth anniversary of Jamaican independence, this commemorative banknote was released by the Bank of Jamaica under the governorship of Richard Byles, during the administration of Prime Minister Andrew Holness. Jamaica had declared independence from British colonial rule on 6 August 1962, and six decades later this note was struck to honour that milestone and the political figures who shaped the nation’s modern democratic identity. The note bears the date 01.06.2022 as its formal issue date, making it a precisely dateable artefact of Jamaican monetary and constitutional history.
On the front, the note is dominated by two side-by-side portrait engravings of Michael Manley and Edward Seaga, both former Prime Ministers of Jamaica, whose names are printed beneath their respective likenesses in clear black caption text. Michael Manley, son of national hero Norman Manley and leader of the People’s National Party, appears on the left, while Edward Seaga, leader of the Jamaica Labour Party, appears on the right — two political rivals whose tenures defined the turbulent and transformative decades of Jamaican independence. The portraits are rendered in a detailed intaglio-style engraving against a pale ground, with soft tonal gradations capturing facial definition. The principal colours of the front face are warm champagne and gold tones, transitioning into greener hues toward the left margin. Vertically along the left edge, the serial number AA118126 is printed in green ink, and the same serial number appears horizontally in the lower central field in matching green typography. The denomination “$2000” is printed in large, bold numerals in the lower right quadrant in deep olive-green ink, with “Two Thousand Dollars” written in full beneath it. The issuing authority “BANK OF JAMAICA” is inscribed prominently across the top of the note in capital letters. Centrally, between the portraits and the security strip, a commemorative logo featuring the text “60 FESTIVAL OF INDEPENDENCE” is visible, along with the Governor’s facsimile signature and the printed text “ISSUED UNDER THE BANK OF JAMAICA ACT” alongside the issue date. The Coat of Arms of Jamaica appears in small engraved form between the two portrait captions. On the far right, the note incorporates a wide holographic security strip featuring the “BOJ” monogram, a large stylised “X” or butterfly motif in blue and green iridescent tones, and a smaller portrait vignette of both Manley and Seaga repeated within the foil. The numeral “2000” also appears within the security strip in holographic form. A guilloché background of fine interlocking geometric patterns fills the central field, providing subtle anti-counterfeiting texture across the cream ground.
The reverse presents a vivid central composition depicting a group of Jamaican children — boys and girls of varying ages — gathered closely together, smiling outward, rendered in detailed intaglio engraving with fine line work that captures individual facial expressions and clothing. Beneath this group portrait, the text “OUT OF MANY, ONE PEOPLE” is printed, referencing Jamaica’s national motto. The denomination “2000” appears in large numerals in the upper right area, and “$2000” is repeated in bold form to the right of centre. The text “Two Thousand Dollars” is printed in full along the lower section. “BANK OF JAMAICA” is inscribed across the top in the same serif capital typography as the front. The Coat of Arms of Jamaica is visible in the right portion of the reverse, engraved in fine detail. The dominant colour palette of the reverse shifts toward cool blue-grey and silver tones, with subtle green and yellow underlying hues in the guilloché patterning. The left side of the reverse carries the same wide holographic security strip visible from the front, now showing the butterfly motif, the dual portrait vignette of Manley and Seaga, the “BOJ” lettering, and the iridescent “2000” denomination all clearly visible from this side. The vertical text “Two Thousand Dollars” also runs along the left edge in grey-green ink.
