5.000 Dollars Jamaican Dollar (Issued 2022)

Issued on 1 January 2022 to mark the sixtieth anniversary of Jamaican independence, this commemorative banknote was released by the Bank of Jamaica under the governorship of Richard Byles during a period of significant national reflection and economic reform on the island. Jamaica had gained independence from British colonial rule on 6 August 1962, and six decades later the Bank of Jamaica chose to honour that milestone through the issue of this specially designed five-thousand-dollar note. The commemorative series represented a departure from the standard polymer notes already in circulation, celebrating the contributions of key figures from Jamaica’s post-independence political history. The note carries the date 01.01.2022 as printed on its face, anchoring it precisely within this anniversary context.

On the front, the note presents two prominent portrait subjects rendered in a detailed engraving style against a warm palette of orange, gold, and cream tones. The left-hand portrait depicts Donald Sangster, Jamaica’s second Prime Minister, who served briefly in 1967 before his untimely death, with his name printed in small text beneath the image. Beside him stands Hugh Shearer, who served as Jamaica’s third Prime Minister from 1967 to 1972, similarly labelled beneath his portrait. Both figures are shown from the chest upward in a formal, composed style with fine line engraving giving depth and texture to their features. Between and slightly below the two portraits sits the Jamaican coat of arms. To the right of centre, a commemorative “60” logo appears alongside the text “60 YEARS LATER THE DREAM LIVES,” forming the visual heart of the anniversary theme. The serial number AB514258 appears twice — once vertically along the left margin and once horizontally in the lower centre of the note. The text “BANK OF JAMAICA” is printed across the upper portion of the note in clear serif typography, while “Five Thousand Dollars” and “$5000” appear prominently in the lower section. An issuing statement reading “ISSUED UNDER THE BANK OF JAMAICA ACT” is printed with the date 01.01.2022, accompanied by the Governor’s signature in black ink. Along the right-hand edge of the note runs a wide holographic security strip containing a dynamic “X” or star-burst motif in iridescent teal and gold, alongside a repeat of the two portraits in miniature and the “BOJ” Bank of Jamaica monogram. Guilloché fine-line patterns and geometric background printing in muted orange and yellow fill the surrounding areas of the note, giving it a layered, security-rich appearance.

The reverse of the note continues in the same warm orange and coral colour palette. “BANK OF JAMAICA” is printed horizontally across the upper portion in the same serif typeface, with “$5000” displayed prominently in large bold numerals in the upper right corner. The denomination “Five Thousand Dollars” appears again along the lower margin, and “5000” is printed vertically in large ghost lettering through the centre of the note as a background watermark-style element. The dominant central image on the reverse is a detailed aerial or elevated photographic-style depiction of a multi-lane highway interchange, capturing sweeping curves of road infrastructure amid what appears to be Jamaican terrain, with the caption “HIGHWAY 2000” printed beneath it. This image, rendered in warm terracotta and brown tones, occupies most of the right-hand portion of the reverse. On the left side, the holographic security strip is again visible from the reverse angle, carrying the same iridescent “X” motif and miniature portrait imagery of the two Prime Ministers, with the “BOJ” monogram repeated at the base of the strip. The overall printing is crisp and modern, consistent with contemporary security printing standards for polymer or high-security paper substrate notes.
