The Jamaican five dollar coin replaced the five dollar banknote in the mid-1990s as inflation pushed the denomination into coinage. This is a distinctive seven-sided (heptagonal) coin struck in a silvery nickel-plated alloy, with rounded corners and a smooth curved edge that make it easy to recognise by touch as well as sight.

On the obverse, the coin displays the full coat of arms of Jamaica: a red cross set with five golden pineapples on a shield, supported by a Taino man holding a bow and a Taino woman with a basket of fruit, and crested by a Jamaican crocodile standing on a log. The national motto “OUT OF MANY, ONE PEOPLE” runs on a scroll beneath, with “JAMAICA” above and “FIVE DOLLARS” and the date “1996” around the lower rim.

On the reverse appears the portrait of Norman Manley, one of Jamaica’s National Heroes, facing left. The surrounding legend reads “THE RT. EXCELLENT NORMAN MANLEY” with “NATIONAL HERO” below, honouring the statesman who helped lead the country towards independence.
