50 Dollars Jamaican Dollar (Issued 2013-2021)

Surviving examples of the 2013–2021 Jamaican fifty-dollar note circulated widely across the island during a period of active economic life, meaning that well-preserved specimens are increasingly difficult to find outside of Jamaica itself. The note’s circulation lifespan, combined with the tropical climate in which it was used, has meant that notes in crisp, uncirculated condition are far less common than their print run might suggest. Historians and currency enthusiasts are drawn to this issue for its vivid portrayal of Jamaican national identity, honouring one of the island’s most revered freedom fighters. The series represents a confident expression of post-independence Jamaican culture rendered through modern security printing.

On the front, the dominant feature is a finely engraved portrait of Samuel Sharpe, the national hero of Jamaica who led the 1831 Christmas Rebellion against slavery and whose name is labelled beneath the portrait in small capital lettering to the lower left. The portrait is rendered with considerable tonal depth, capturing Sharpe’s features with a sombre and determined expression, set against a pale blue-green background that transitions softly across the central field of the note. The words “BANK OF JAMAICA” appear prominently in bold dark lettering along the upper edge, while the denomination “Fifty Dollars” is printed in large serif lettering across the centre of the note. “$50” appears in each of the four corners in bold numerals, and a blue electrotype numeral “669” is visible as part of the serial numbering sequence, with the full serial number “TQ508669” printed in dark ink across the lower centre. To the right of the portrait, a delicate floral motif in pale lilac and blue occupies the central zone, accompanied by the Jamaican coat of arms — depicting a crocodile above a shield flanked by two figures and a pineapple above — rendered in fine engraving to the lower right. The signature of the Governor of the Bank of Jamaica appears beneath the coat of arms alongside the text “GOVERNOR”, and the date “01.06.2013” is printed clearly to the right. The legend “ISSUED UNDER THE BANK OF JAMAICA ACT” runs along the lower margin in small but legible type. The note’s borders are decorated with intricate guilloché scrollwork in deep maroon and purple tones, and a vertical security strip is embedded within the paper, visible as a thin integrated thread running through the note’s body. The overall colour palette blends aquamarine, pale violet, and warm cream tones with darker engraved accents.

The reverse presents a sweeping panoramic view of Doctor’s Cave Beach in Montego Bay, one of Jamaica’s most celebrated coastal landmarks, identified by the caption “DOCTOR’S CAVE BEACH” printed in small lettering to the lower left of the scene. The engraved vignette depicts the beach with considerable detail — palm trees framing the scene to the right, a long wooden pier or jetty extending out into a calm sea in the upper centre, and groups of figures visible along the white sandy shoreline. The sea and sky are rendered in soft graduated tones of teal and blue, while the foliage and beach structures are picked out in darker inked lines. To the upper portion of the note, “BANK OF JAMAICA” again appears in bold lettering, and “$50” denomination markers are placed in the upper left and lower right corners. “FIFTY DOLLARS” is printed in bold serif lettering across the lower centre of the reverse. The left margin incorporates a ghost watermark impression of Samuel Sharpe’s portrait, visible as a pale tonal image emerging from the paper, and the background of the note carries fine multicoloured guilloché patterns in pink, green, and cream that frame the central vignette. The lower corners feature further scrollwork and wave-pattern borders in deep claret and teal, consistent with the overall security printing aesthetic of the series.
