500 Dollars Jamaican Dollar (Issued 2022)
The historic settlement of Fort Royal, depicted on the reverse of this commemorative issue, stands as one of the most significant locations in Jamaican history — a former colonial hub that was largely destroyed by the catastrophic earthquake of 1692, reshaping the island’s political and commercial geography forever. Its appearance on this denomination reflects the Bank of Jamaica’s intention to anchor the note within the deep historical narrative of the island. This 2022 issue forms part of the Bank of Jamaica’s commemorative series, marking the sixtieth anniversary of the institution, as indicated by the prominent anniversary emblem visible on the face of the note. The polymer substrate and vibrant colour palette distinguish this release from earlier paper issues of the same denomination.
On the front, two of Jamaica’s most celebrated National Heroes are portrayed in confident, closely composed engraved portraits at the centre of the note: Nanny of the Maroons, the eighteenth-century Maroon leader and freedom fighter, appears on the left wearing a wrapped head covering, and Samuel Sharpe, the Baptist deacon who led the 1831 Christmas Rebellion against slavery, is shown to the right — both figures identified by name in printed text directly beneath their portraits. The overall colour scheme is dominated by rich violet and purple tones, with geometric guilloché patterns visible in the background behind and around the portraits, creating layers of fine-line security printing. The Jamaican coat of arms appears between the two name captions beneath the portraits, rendered in full detail. To the upper right, the text “BANK OF JAMAICA” is printed prominently, accompanied by the statement “ISSUED UNDER THE BANK OF JAMAICA ACT” along with the issue date and a printed Governor’s signature below. A stylised “60” anniversary logo in green and gold occupies the lower central area of the obverse, commemorating sixty years of the Bank of Jamaica. The serial number AE135403 appears twice — once vertically on the left edge of the note in purple, and once horizontally in a darker tone towards the centre-right. The denomination “500” appears in large numerals in the lower right corner, accompanied by the dollar symbol, and the words “Five Hundred Dollars” run along the lower left. A transparent window panel is integrated into the right-hand side of the polymer note, featuring a small portrait inset of both figures rendered in greyscale alongside the denomination “500”, with the BOJ bird emblem and additional fine security printing visible within the window itself. Colour-shifting ink and microprinting are visible within the security features of the transparent panel area.
The reverse of the note carries a dominant colour palette of blue, lilac, and soft purple, with the text “BANK OF JAMAICA” printed across the upper portion and the denomination “$500” in large numerals to the upper right. A detailed engraving of the historic Fort Royal settlement occupies the lower right-hand section of the reverse, depicting colonial-era buildings with distinctive pitched roofs rendered in fine intaglio line work, with the label “FORT ROYAL” printed beneath the scene. Above and behind the townscape, a large historical cartographic illustration of Jamaica is reproduced, showing the island with period-style text and geographic annotations including “JAMAICA” and coastal detail — the map rendered in a light, watermark-like tone that creates visual depth across the central field of the note. Vertical text reading “BANK OF JAMAICA” and “Five Hundred Dollars” runs along the right edge. To the left, the transparent polymer window again shows through from the obverse, with the greyscale portrait inset of Nanny of the Maroons and Samuel Sharpe visible alongside the numeral “500”, providing a clear security element when the note is held to the light. Fine guilloché background patterns cover the remaining surface area in tonal violet and lavender, adding both visual texture and anti-counterfeiting protection to the overall design.
